A Course in Miracles: Original Edition

A Course in Miracles: Original Edition

A Course in Miracles is spiritual guide for life. The book begins: “This is A Course in Miracles, it is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary.” “The Course” as the book is commonly known, comprises of 365 lessons of spiritual guidance. It is divided into three sections: Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers.

The author, Dr. Helen Schucman channeled the content of the book over a 7-year period between 1965 and 1972 whilst she was a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University in New York. She gave herself no credit for the authorship of the text and claimed she received it as a kind of mental dictation from a voice who identified himself as Jesus. Needless to say A Course in Miracles has caused consternation among certain Christians who cry, “Beware of false prophets” and while the book is Christian in tone, much of the writing is comparable to eastern wisdom traditions.

The book tells us of the return of Jesus. It states, “The Second Coming is the awareness of reality, not its return. Behold, my children, reality is here. It belongs to you and me and God and is perfectly satisfying to all of us. Only this awareness heals because it is the awareness of truth.”

The key tenet throughout the book is forgiveness, and we are informed, forgiveness is the answer to all of life’s problems. “Let forgiveness be the substitute for fear. This is the only rule for happy dreams.” The book goes on to say; “forgiveness recognizes what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven. What is sin, except a false idea about God’s Son? Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God.”

Sin, we are told is non-existent; it is merely an illusion constructed by the ego, and the world we see around us is an illusion constructed by our thoughts. “The world is false perception. It is born of error, and it has not left its source. It will remain no longer than the thought which gave it birth is cherished.”

“The only thing that is real is created by God, there is nothing else and everything we think and feel is real in the physical world is nothing but an illusion. What God did not create does not exist. And everything that does exist exists as He created it. The world you see has nothing to do with reality. It is of your own making, and it does not exist.”

Love is everything; perfect love is the goal for all of us and we simply have to let it in; “the search for love is but the honest searching out of everything that interferes with love.” Love is the opposite of judgement and love really does conquer all.

The original text was dictated to Schucman who sat in a trance state and wrote down in shorthand everything the inner voice told her. Dr. William Thetford, was Schucman’s supervisor and friend at the time, and he assisted her by typing up the text and arranging it into a coherent document. Personal information given to Schucman and Thetford was intentionally omitted and the 1500 pages that remained became what we now know as A Course In Miracles.

In 1972 the text was sent to Hugh Lynne Cayce, son of the famous American psychic and medical intuitive, Edgar Cayce. Cayce was interested in the work and assisted by distributing it to a select number of people. A later edited version was published in 1975 by “The Foundation for Inner Peace.” More than a million copies were sold around the world and the book became a huge commercial success. In 2000 a court case took place to establish copyright of the work and this earlier more complete text was judged by a US court to be outside of copyright and in the public domain. It became known as the “Hugh Lynn Cayce text.”

The “Course” is essential reading for spiritual seekers, religious followers, or anyone searching for spiritual meaning in their lives.

A Course in Miracles International will this year celebrate International Forgiveness Week and Weekend of Perfect Peace on September 14th through September 23rd. Celebrations will be held at the organization’s Miracles Healing Center in Wisconsin Dells, WI, and in affiliate centers around the globe.

The event is described as “A family festival celebrating the freedom and peace that the healing power of love and forgiveness is bringing to all the world.”

International Forgiveness Week and Weekend of Perfect Peace auspiciously coincide in a ten-day period; with the United Nations International Day of Peace on September 21st forming the cornerstone of the celebration.

In an open letter of invitation to “all the world”, Miracles Healing Center director, Reverend Peter Bonnes explains that, “Through this observance, we are inviting all of our friends from the dark days of the 20th and 21st Centuries, to share together through single acts of reconciliation, their own joyous recognition of the Eternally Creating Reality of this Universe a Reality of which we are all individually and in consort, through the power of forgiving love, an indivisible part.”

Reverend Bonnes goes on to say that “Friends and families of the victims of the September 11 attacks of 2001, are expected to gather with Veterans and Servicemen and friends from many nations and many wars, to share at last some incomparable healing moments.

“The healing power of our forgiveness will bring to all of us a new light of forbearance and understanding that will radiate among all the nations of this world in a single burst of Healing Grace.”

Up to 100,000 guests from at least 60 countries are expected to descend on this famous Midwest resort and recreation area to practice together some good old-fashioned, one-on-one, let-bygones-be bygones forgiveness and experience the “peace that passeth understanding.”

Celebrations for International Forgiveness Week and Weekend of Perfect Peace will be hosted by spiritual teachers from the Miracles Healing Center in Wisconsin Dells. Their inspired message of hope is simply that all things are possible through God’s Love.

The Journey Home: The Obstacles to Peace in A Course in Miracles

The Journey Home: The Obstacles to Peace in A Course in Miracles

This book consists of a substantial expansion of the discussion in ‘The Obstacles to Peace,’ first published in 1987. In revising the earlier work, we have added an extensive introduction and epilogue, and tripled the discussion, including many more references to other passages in the Course. In addition, the old question-and-answer format has been changed to enhance the flow of the material.

‘The Obstacles to Peace’ sections present the important themes in ‘A Course in Miracles,’ ranging from the metaphysical idea that God did not create the world and the body – and indeed knows absolutely nothing about them – to the specific teachings on the projection of guilt, and its undoing through the practice of forgiveness in our special relationships. There are also incisive passages where Jesus speaks of himself and the projections that have been put upon him, emphasizing the important role the ego has given him in its thought system. This distortion is corrected by Jesus making clear the nature of the role he has in his thought system, undoing the ego through helping us to change our minds about what we think and perceive.

Form versus Content: Sex and Money

Form versus Content: Sex and Money

The near-universal preoccupation with the issues of sex and money can be traced to the ego’s agenda concealed in our minds—specifically, its plan to keep us rooted in the body and the world so we will never get to the real source of pain and conflict, which is the mind’s decision to sustain the separation from God, but not be held responsible for it. In the context of the ego’s principles and its doctrine of specialness and separate interests, both sex and money can be seen as behavioral forms that give expression to the content of our minds. The focus in this book, therefore, is on identifying the content that gives rise to the guilt, conflict, myths, and obsession associated with sex and money. Forgiveness enables us to shift our attention from the complexity of behavior to the simplicity of purpose. Thus sex and money, which have come to express the ego’s guilt-inducing thought system of one or the other, are transformed in purpose to reflect the Holy Spirit’s healing principle of together, or not at all.

The Ego Tunnel: The Science of the Mind and the Myth of the Self

This is a radical rethinking of the nature of consciousness. “The Ego Tunnel”, a major work from one of the brightest of the new generation of philosophers of mind, proposes a simple yet radical rethinking of the nature of consciousness and a fascinating and controversial exploration of what it implies. We’re used to thinking of the self’s relation to the world as a dyad-the inner me as opposed to the outer world. This model assumes that what we’re perceiving when we experience the world is actually the world. It’s almost impossible to escape a sort of naive realism when you employ this model, since the alternative is that the world outside yourself is a dream. Thomas Metzinger’s model, however, based on the increasingly sophisticated and bizarre findings of neuroscience, is different. There is an outside world and an inner, unconscious mind, but we directly perceive neither. Instead, both our outward perceptions and our inward consciousness are a kind of interface, a membrane, between the mind and the world.

The Healing Power of Kindness, Vol. 1: Releasing Judgment

The idea for this book originated with a talk given at the end of a week-long class on sickness and healing at our Center. The teaching staff was struck by the paradox of students on the one hand spending a week discussing healing, in terms of forgiveness and undoing separation, and on the other, fervently practicing judgment and condemnation of each other, directly opposite to the kind, gentle tone of Jesus’ words in ‘A Course in Miracles. This talk thus was devoted to the kindness of healing, in hopes of reinforcing Jesus’ message of undoing separation. Kindness reflects our inherent oneness with each other, while attack drives us still further apart in our awareness.
